This characterful late Victorian diamond ring dates to 1900 and is fully hallmarked for 18ct gold at the Chester Assay Office. At its centre, a rose-cut diamond sits within a striking starburst setting, with the surrounding hand-engraved decoration adding to its distinctly antique character. The broad gold band is further embellished with geometric and foliate-style engraved panels, giving the ring a lovely sense of movement while the softly worn surface reflects its age and previous life.

The Chester hallmark is particularly interesting, carrying the makers mark JH, the crown and 18 fineness mark, the Chester town mark and the date letter R for 1900. The combination of the star-set rose-cut diamond and engraved gold is wonderfully characteristic of late Victorian jewellery, when diamonds were often celebrated for their shape and sparkle without dominating the substantial gold work.

Fun fact: Rose-cut diamonds are among the oldest diamond cuts still encountered in antique jewellery. Unlike modern brilliant cuts, they have a flat base and a domed, faceted top designed to catch and reflect candlelight, making them particularly suited to jewellery made before electric lighting became commonplace.

More specs below:

• fully hallmarked JH 18 Chester R (1900)
• 18ct yellow gold
• the diamond measures 2mm in diameter
• the band width is 3mm at the narrowest point
• the ring weighs a nice 2.7g

Overall, the ring is in great condition and wears comfortably.

FAQs

Do you offer resizing or alterations?

I'm afraid due to lack of resources, I cannot offer any ring resizing or alterations at the moment, but I do recommend to my clients to reach out to their local jeweller for a quote on how much they would charge.

What condition are these pieces in?

All of my items are solid gold and are either modern, retro (over 20 years old), vintage (over 40 years old), or antique (over 100 years old) but they're all preloved/secondhand. Signs of wear and imperfections are more than likely (but isn't that just the joy of preloved and old jewellery?) so please make sure to double-check product information before purchasing to avoid any disappointment.

How do I know the metal purity is accurate?

All metal purities listed (e.g. 9ct, 18ct) are based on visible hallmarks present on the items. Where hallmarks are unclear or absent, this will be stated in the listing (e.g. tested for 9ct gold). All my items are solid – no plated or vermeil here!

How will my item be packaged and shipped?

All pieces are carefully packaged in a little white box with a gold string bow; for UK customers I send via Royal Mail Special Delivery to ensure they arrive promptly. For international customers, the same applies, and the delivery service is calculated at checkout. Items will be insured as per delivery service default limit.

What is your returns policy?

We want you to love your purchase. If you're not completely happy, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your item. As all pieces are one-of-a-kind antiques, we cannot offer exchanges, but we will do our best to resolve any issues.
